Shou Sugi Ban Barn
Building Dimensions:
56’x64’ with 8’ porches
This barn in California utilized the Shou Sugi Ban technique to burn and oil all of the siding of the barn. All boards were burned, washed, dried, oiled, and cured in the sun for several weeks. It was no small task, but it added a beautiful and unique character to the barn. The burning and oiling of the wood also preserves the wood and increases its lifespan. On the inside, you will see Ponderosa pine shiplap creating a rustic and warm look throughout! The main floor has 2,304 sq. ft. of enclosed space, with an additional 960 sq. ft. in the loft.

Shou Sugi Ban, or Yakisugi (焼杉), can be literally translated as “burned cedar”. It has been used as a traditional method to protect timber siding surfaces, primarily for exterior cladding on traditional Japanese houses, when there was no means of chemical wood protection available. This method of Yakisugi improves siding longevity by preventing decay, insect, and mould infestation, makes the planks more dimensionally stable, and improves fire retardancy.
